Reason #1 - why children are expensive.....

So tonight we did it. That's right, we paid for a babysitter. Yes, I know many of you are saying, "it's about time - the babies are already 9 months old," but I am a wimp. Who exactly am I going to leave my children with? Well the answer comes in a familiar form: twin girls. There are the cutest teenage twin girls in our ward whom I have been meaning to call, but haven't had the nerve. But, tonight I did it. I got a call from some friends of ours (Josh and Natalie - thanks we had a fun time) who wanted us to go out to eat with them tonight - and I really wanted to go, but it is so much energy carrying two babies in, locating two high chairs, trying to keep them happy, trying to feed them, all while attempting to eat and carry on an adult conversation. Just doesn't happen. So I set up this operation, and low and behold - it was not too bad! I only questioned Jeremy about 15 times, "What time is it?" He finally began responding to my paranoia with a roll of the eyes and a ever familiar "Deal with it face." (If you haven't seen it before - you should ask him to show it to you.)

But alas, all was well. We saw a film, Juno, that I am liking the more and more I think about the deep underlying story it told with natural simplicity. I would recommend it. I mean I am no Roger and Ebert or anything, but it definitely deserves two thumbs up.With that said, let's cut to the chase.... kids are expensive. We did not do anything too extravagant, just Wingers and a movie. Normally would have cost us under $50 bucks. Right? That's cool. And one would think that by leaving your children and not having to buy them anything, that it would not cost anything extra. Oh, how Jeremy and I have a lot of things to learn. Somehow, these two little poopers made that tab double after we paid for food for the babysitters, their wages, and then our food and movie. Oh yeah, that brings out another topic for discussion, how much do you pay for babysitters? What if you have two of them and two kids?

Anyways, I did not write this blog to complain, but simply to educate those who wish to have children on the expenses that might occur once they are brought into this world. But this is not a complaint even though in China "I hear they give away babies like free iPods. You know, they pretty much just put them in those t-shirt guns and shoot them out at sporting events" (Quote from the movie). To my little old American self, I recognize and appreciate the blessings my children are - albeit even if they are expensive ones.

I've started to wonder the same thing. How much is the going rate these days? I'm sure it's way more than I'd like to pay. We haven't gotten a sitter either for the same two reasons: there really isn't anyone here we trust enough yet (and the ones we do trust already have kids)and we don't want to spend the money. I'm sure as time goes on, I'll break down and get a sitter. But for right now, we're happy taking her with us.

I would say somewhere between $6-7 an hour... and that is why you live next to grandparents!! FREE BABYSITTING... thankfully we wont have to think about that for a couple more months!

It was so much fun though, and the movie was AMAZING! We have been quoting it and laughing ever since. My favorite thing that I ever did was start a date night rotation. Basically we babysat one saturday a month, then all the rest would be at different friends house( the kids we babysat parents) We would just trade. It worked out beautifully and we didn't end up paying $100 bucks for a crap meal and a movie! How much did you end up paying them? Did you pay each of them?

I rarely ever paid anyone to watch my children. Number one; I rarely left them and when I did my Mom babysat (for free). Number two; eventually I had older children to babysit, and so that might be wrong not to pay kids to babysit their sibs. but I can probably justify it. Like take it off of their food and rent expense. Any of this sound familar? Yes, just guilt the older ones into free babysitting. Ha ha! I know you are years away from any of this helping. So my advice get one teenager (or in this case one twin)to babysit. One sitter per two kids is fine and twice as cheap!
PS This Granny WISHED she lived close enough to babysit for free I know it would never get old!

As a former babysitter, much in demand (children were fascinated with my redhair & braces), I can testify that the rates may have changed, but I bet the net result is about the same ... that is, if I earned enough in one evening to pay for me to see a movie & go out for a fast food binge afterwards, I considered myself well paid. You can translate that to today's prices.

This'll make you sick; here were my rates (early 1960's): 50-cents/hr for 2 kids, 25-cents for family cousins, zero for sibs (see "granny" Krsty above). Oh & my rates doubled after midnight! (however, 2 x 0 still = 0 for Krsty, but of course, we must consider the fun of babysitting one's little sister includes being able to tease them without parental interference).

What a surprise. I was so surprised when I called your Mom to see there are two more little Nelsons! We are so excited. Please keep in touch. It was so great talking to you. We can hardly wait to come see them.
